“The Big Log” is a memory picture. When my husband, Russell, and I decided we wanted to have our family of boys grow up on a farm (as we both had), Russell left the teaching profession and we bought the farm on which we lived. On our woodlot this huge oak tree (four foot in diameter) was struck by lightning shortly after our move. So the tree was felled with a crosscut saw and then hauled to the sawmill to have it sawed into lumber. Of course, hauling the tree from the woodlot afforded a chance for a family outing as the job was accomplished.
