The Amish homes are pared down to bare essentials. The kitchen is the center of activities. The women play a large part in the family’s success; they have large gardens and they prepare and preserve the food, as well as make the clothing for their families. The children feel needed and are close to the family as they work with and dress like their elders; the girls with their long dresses and prayer bonnets and the boys with their bowl haircuts and suspendered pants.
